BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide fifteen amino acids long. Its sequence was taken from a larger protein found in human gastric juice, and it was first described by a research group in Zagreb in the early 1990s. The name stands for "body protection compound".
It has been studied mostly in cell culture and animal models, in work on tendon, ligament, muscle and gut tissue. Published human data is very limited.
