MOTS-c is a 16 amino acid peptide encoded by a short reading frame inside the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene, which makes it one of the mitochondrial-derived peptides. It was discovered in Pinchas Cohen's laboratory at the University of Southern California and first published in 2015.
Research so far has been in cell culture and animal models of muscle metabolism. It has not been studied in human clinical trials.
