Glutathione is a tripeptide made from glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine, joined by an unusual gamma-glutamyl bond. In its reduced form (GSH) the cysteine's thiol group is free, and it is the most abundant small thiol in animal cells. Frederick Gowland Hopkins isolated and named it in 1921.

It is a standard subject in oxidative stress and redox research, where the ratio of reduced to oxidised glutathione is a common measure of a cell's redox state.

Technical details

Formula C10H17N3O6S
Molecular weight 307.3 g/mol
CAS 70-18-8
PubChem CID 124886
Form Freeze-dried powder, 600 mg per vial
Research to date Extensive cell and animal research; a standard compound in redox biochemistry

Lab certificate

Tested by Freedom Diagnostics: identity confirmed by LC-MS, purity 99.68% by HPLC (accession 2609080740, reported 9 September 2026).

Storage

Store the sealed vial in a freezer at around -20 °C, away from light and moisture. Reduced glutathione slowly oxidises in air, so keep the vial sealed.

For laboratory research use only. Not for human or veterinary use, and not for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.
