NAD+ is a coenzyme present in all living cells. It carries electrons in the reactions that produce cellular energy, and it is used up by several enzyme families, including the sirtuins and PARPs. It was first found in yeast by Harden and Young in 1906.

It is one of the most studied molecules in cell biology. A large body of research, much of it in cell and animal models, looks at how NAD+ levels change with age and at the enzymes that consume it.
